MICRO-HYDRO POWER

Of all the small renewable energy systems around, a small hydro system - where it's feasible - may be the most cost-effective and reliable. If you have running water on or near your property, you may want to consider investing in a micro-energy system. A micro-hydro system can mean energy around the clock and year-round, if you have a steady stream of water. All that is required is a fall of several feet high, and a micro-hydro system, consisting of: - piping - a turbine generator system - integration with regular power systems (where possible) As with other renewable energy systems, micro-hydro systems can be free-standing, hybrid or grid-integrated. A micro-hydro system very simply takes the energy available from a falling stream of water and converts it into usable electricity.

There are two basic kinds of turbines used in hydro systems:

Impulse turbines spin freely in the air. Water is directed toward the turbine by a sput or nozzle. As long as there is some flow, the nozzle can be adjusted to regulate the flow - especially in a cross-flow turbine. Impulse turbines are the most commonly used in micro hydro systems.

Reaction turbines are fully immersed in water and is entirely enclosed in housing, so that the full pressure of the water turns the turbine. These are more likely to be used if water flow is relatively consistent throughout the year and the water pressure (or head) is low grade.

The Natural Energy Shop supplies and installs a range of micro-hydro power systems suitable for:
- In-Stream Applications
- Low-Head Applications
- High-Head Applications
- Boats
- Grid-Connect Locations
- Remote (Off-Grid) Locations.
